uma apreciação das ideias duradouras de George Devereux

Este capítulo é baseado em três suposições. Em primeiro lugar, considero que não existem emoções que sejam exclusivas do trabalho de campo antropológico, o que significa que a nossa tarefa é identificar situações dentro e fora do campo que possam ser comparadas de forma útil e que possam lançar luz um sobre o outro. Em segundo lugar, contesto que as emoções são apenas um aspecto de qualquer experiência humana e que violentamos a complexidade da experiência vivida quando fazemos cortes analíticos entre emoção e pensamento, ou emoção, os sentidos, pensamento e ação. Terceiro, repudio a visão predominante de que a coisa mais significativa que os antropólogos têm a dizer sobre as emoções é que elas são socialmente construídas e performadas, pois a realidade bruta é que muitos sentimentos avassaladores simplesmente não podem ser reduzidos nem à cultura nem à filogenia.
