O gótico e os limites do iluminismo: o caso Wuthering heights

Resumo

Trata-se, em um primeiro momento, de examinar a obra O morro dos ventos uivantes, de Emily Brontë, com vistas a estabelecer os aspectos que permitem associá-la à tradição gótica. Em seguida, considerar-se-á de que maneira essa filiação permite que a obra em questão seja lida como uma tentativa de recusa não apenas do que veio a ser chamado de gótico feminino, mas também, principalmente, do modelo de sociabilidade estabelecido por parte da filosofia das luzes britânicas, notadamente no que diz respeito a aspectos como a polidez e o tratamento destinado às mulheres.

ABSTRACT

At first, we shall examine Wuthering heights, by Emily Brontë, in an attempt to determine the aspects which would authorize an association between the novel and the gothic tradition. Afterwards, we shall consider the ways in which this affiliation allow Wuthering Heights to be read as an attempt to refuse not only what came to be called the female gothic, but also, first and foremost, the model of sociability established by the British Enlightenment, notably when it comes to points such as politeness and the place to be occupied by women.
