A brief history
Ambivalências is a biannual scientific journal published by the Graduate Program in Anthropology of the Federal University of Sergipe (PPGA-UFS). It aims to gather and disseminate studies and discussions on anthropology and its interfaces with other sciences and fields of knowledge. Created in 2013, Ambivalências was originally edited by the Processos Identitários e Poder Research Group. Since February 2024, the journal has been edited by the PPGA-UFS.
Focus and scope
Ambivalências accepts, for eventual publication, scientific papers, research reports, essays, translations, reviews and unpublished interviews, in the field of anthropology or in its interfaces with other sciences and areas of knowledge, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. Translations (always into Portuguese) must be authorized by the original author and/or publisher. The journal also publishes dossiers, which must be proposed at least six months in advance (see Criteria for organizing a dossier). Papers can be sent in a continuous flow, or through calls for publication, and the works will eventually be published in the biannual edition following the completion of the evaluation, review and acceptance procedures.

Peer review
The texts submitted to Ambivalências undergo an initial assessment by the editorial board. The editors may request corrections or additions or reject manuscripts that are outside the focus and the scope of the journal, or that have any formal inadequacies, at the discretion of the editorial board, with due information to the author. If a manuscript is accepted, at least two double-blind reviews will be requested, i.e. omitting the names of the reviewers and the names of the authors. If there are differences between the reviews, another expert may be consulted. The reviews will serve as advice for the editorial board, which has the prerogative to decide whether to publish the paper.
Open access policy
Ambivalências offers free and immediate access to its content, following the principle of global democratization of knowledge. Ambivalências allows any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or create links to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, transmit them as data to software or use them for any other legal purpose, without the need for user registration to access the content.
Criteria for organizing a dossier
Ambivalências accepts proposals for up to two dossiers per year, to be published in one of its bi-annual issues. Proposals must be submitted at least six months in advance of the respective issue. The proposal must fit in the general theme of the Ambivalências journal, i.e. studies and discussions on anthropology, or its interfaces with other sciences and fields of knowledge. Dossier proposals must be inter-institutional, involving teaching and research institutions from different regions of Brazil and, if possible, from abroad.
Applicants must submit the dossier proposal via e-mail – revista.ambivalencias@gmail.com – with justification, objectives, and description of the proposal, as well as the name, institutional identification, ORCID, CV and e-mail address of the organizers. At least one of the organizers must hold a PhD. If the proposal is approved by the editorial board, the journal will issue a call for papers. Works submitted for the dossier follow the journal's standard evaluation procedure. The DOSSIER must contain a minimum of six and a maximum of ten papers, articles or essays. Translations, reviews and interviews, even when they follow the theme of the dossier, will be published in the FREE SECTIONS.
