This article aims to discuss the contributions of exploratory-investigative tasks and manipulative teaching materials for the study of quadrilaterals by students in the 8th grade of Elementary School in a public school in the Rio de Janeiro state. The field diary, audio and video recording of the students’ performance of tasks, photographic report of the different moments and activities were used for data production. The exploratory-investigative tasks enabled the student to understand the concepts of quadrilaterals, through observation, manipulation, hypothesis survey and the recording of their discoveries, promoting significant changes in school culture and behavior. The manipulable materials allowed the students to identify properties of the quadrilaterals and to understand concepts. The research made it possible to learn concepts and content through the involvement of students to perform tasks, the development of mathematical language, the ability to communicate ideas and investigative skills.
