THE ACTIONS OF A GROUP OF STUDENTS IN A MODELLING PROJECT: “WE ARE MAKING A LOT CURVES TO DO A VERY SIMPLE BUSSINESS”

The aim of this article is to analyze a students’ group actions in the third meeting for a Modelling project development. The research subjects are students of a 3rd year class of the Technical Course Integrated to High School in Environment, at the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais, Governador Valadares campus. The methodological procedure was participant observation and the meeting was recorded in audio and video. Data are of qualitative nature. The study is based on the theoretical approach of Critical Mathematics Education and the Historical-Cultural Theory of Activity. Data analysis indicates that students attribute different meanings to the Modeling project and the strongest arguments are those that bring the Modeling project closer to the ones that are validated in an activity supported by the tradition of school mathematics education.
