Abstract

The increase in the utilization of beams at micro and nano scales has stimulated the development of theories capable of incorporating scale effects, given that classical theory reveals limitations in its precision to model size-dependent phenomena accurately. This current study addresses this gap by employing Timoshenko beam theory applied to the theory of elasticity with gradient deformation in analyzing beams under various boundary conditions: simply supported, doubly clamped, clamped and supported, clamped-free. The problem formulation employed the Ritz Method. The results were compared with those derived from classical continuum mechanics and others available in the literature.

Keywords: scale effect, Timoshenko beam theory, strain gradient.
