Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the interrelationship between Denis Diderot's philosophy and its practical application in dramaturgy, exploring how his philosophical ideas were translated into the plays he wrote. From the reflections presented, it is possible to trace the origins of the modern legacy he left in this regard. Fundamentally, Diderot advocated a break with classical theater, proposing a realism to be manifested both in the content of the plays and in their staging. The philosopher saw theater as a means to capture the intimate truth of the characters, using scenes that functioned as living pictures, where the subtlety of gestures and the arrangement of actors on stage played a pivotal role. This new theatrical approach can be identified as an attempt to blend elements of the visual arts with dramaturgy, which necessitates a reformulation of the way texts were written and interpreted. The work also examines the criticisms and resistances that Diderot's ideas faced, notably from figures like the actress Riccoboni, who defended a more pragmatic and less theoretical or philosophical vision of theater. Ultimately, the article argues that Diderot's contributions were fundamental to the development of theatrical realism and the evolution of modern dramaturgy.
