The privatisation of the sky: neoliberal regulation of the satellite services market in Argentina

Abstract

In 2025 Argentina freed its skies to large corporations and removed priorities for national satellites: ARSAT I and II. Since 1997, Argentina has been commercially exploiting the orbital positions assigned by the ITU. However, it was not until the beginning of the 21st century that, within the framework of a pattern of national development accumulation involving the design, manufacture and local operation of satellites, a regulation favourable to Argentine interests was promoted. This paper analyses the ups and downs of the satellite services market regulations dominated by a structure concentrated around large international companies.

Doutora em Ciências Sociais (UBA). Mestre em Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (UNQ). Professora de História (UNLu) e bolsista de pós-doutorado CONICET.

Facundo Picabea, CONICET-IESCT/UNQ-UNLu

PhD. in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, Master in Political Economy (FLACSO) and Professor of History (UNLu). Adjunct researcher at CONICET, based at the Institute for the Study of Science and Technology at the National University of Quilmes, specialising in the area of economics and technology in Argentina. At the National University of Luján he is Director of the Interdisciplinary Social Studies Programme and Director of the BA in History, where he is Regular Professor of Contemporary Argentine History and Introduction to Argentine Economics. He is a regular lecturer in postgraduate courses at several Argentine universities.
