Abstract

Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda contributed decisively to the consolidation of the sociology of culture in Brazil, translating, into this thematic area, problems and theoretical perspectives typical to the Escola Paulista de Sociologia. Conservative modernization and the specificities of Brazilian capitalism are treated, in his work, based on cultural objects. The text places, in this research program, his master's thesis, “A Embalagem do Sistema”, trying to point out how his theoretical influences are mobilized to construct an analysis of Brazilian advertising that has become classic.
