Abstract

In 1954, the first coup d’état planned by the United States in a Latin American country during the Cold War occurred, resulting in the deposition of then-President Jacobo Árbenz. Using U.S. government documentary sources available through the Foreign Relations of the United States, the main question of the article here presented, is,  from the internal perspective of the U.S. government departments and agencies involved in the execution of the coup, primarily the State Department, the CIA, and the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, comprehend to what extent the anti-communism practiced by these U.S. departments and agencies was genuinely a practice against communism in Guatemala, or whether it was anti-nationalism due to the social and economic reforms occurring in the country.
