Abstract

The questions that will guide this philosophical essay on morality, more precisely, on moral duty in the face of a greater ethics are: Is individual motivation as important as current ethics? Do they both have to be in agreement? With this essay we will try to present the classical Greek scenario as a background for the analysis of Socrates' moral choice for death. The justification for this theme lies in the character of Criton, of the homonymous Platonic dialogue, which will serve as a reference for this approach as a Socratic admirer who, at the moment of the death sentence of his friend, creates a moral dilemma. In order to do so, the Greek historical context will be resumed.
