O LITERATO GÓRGIAS DE LEONTINOS: O EPITÁFIO “OCULTO”.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the role of the sophist Gorgias in the field of literature. Gorgias of Leontinus is recognized by scholars of the sophists as one of the main representatives of this philosophical movement, and this epithet is related to his notorious persuasive power. Gorgias had great respect for words and knew that the success of a speech was closely linked to their choice. In The Epitaph, we see a Gorgias different from the one seen in The Praise of Helen and The Defense of Palamedes; we see a Gorgias with a more poetic language, a fact that can be noted by the occurrence of several figures of speech. Gorgian discursive style expanded discussions about rhetoric, both in the field of philosophy and linguistics. However, studies about Gorgian speeches are still incipient, especially here in Brazil, hence the relevance of the topic.
