Abstract

The page, or more precisely the multiframe, defines how a comic can be told. Their size and format limit how frames can be organized and understood. Images are concatenated, which are correlated by the reader and the illusion emerges that those isolated images are part of a single serialized narrative. In this process, the total is more than the sum of the parts, as the association between frames and pages goes beyond the simple before and after. Each fragment is a distinct spatio-temporal coordinate that is continually reordered and re-signified as the
narrative proceeds. If in comics time is space and space is partly shaped by the constraint of the page, what happens when that constraint is removed? If there is no multiframe or page, only the frame remains. What are the consequences of this dissolution of the unity of the page
for comic book narrative and the new interactions that emerge from this shift? Focusing on this issue of the frame and its behavior on the infinite screen, it is proposed to analyze the appcomic Phallaina and how its continuous flow narrative explores the limits of the frame, the gutter, and the page.
