Abstract

Circo Magazine was an adult-themed comic book publication that emerged during the José Sarney administration, in a context of democratic openness and cultural effervescence. The study analyzes the political and economic factors that influenced its rise and fall, highlighting the effects of the Cruzado Plan. Initially favored by increased consumption, the magazine was negatively impacted by economic instability and the confiscation of private capital, making its continuity unfeasible. The historical and social analysis of the eight issues and the special edition of the magazine demonstrates how economic decisions directly affect independent cultural production. It concludes that supporting diverse cultural goods strengthens social dialogue, promotes diversity, and contributes to decolonization, highlighting the importance of public policies aimed at the sustainability of alternative culture.
