Abstract

The participation of indigenous people in the military area was very broad and diversified, occurring since the colonial period. In the 19th century, the National Guard was created, with the aim of maintaining internal order, bringing together poor free guards, members of the imperial elite, as well as blacks and indigenous peoples. Therefore, this article seeks to analyze the participation of indigenous people in the National Guard in the Province of Alagoas, between the years 1850-1857. For this purpose, documentation from the period dealing with the participation of these peoples in the corporation was analyzed, such as letters, reports and speeches produced by authorities. As a result, we observed that the participation of indigenous people in the National Guard also took place in different ways, whether through recruitment or on the initiative of the indigenous people.
