Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the presence of Irish writer Oscar Wilde in the Brazilian press, especially at the time of his trial by the British courts for “flagrant indecency”. Equally controversial and singular, Wilde was the subject of ridicule, criticism and jokes in Brazilian newspapers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through research in the digital archives of the Biblioteca Nacional, we will revisit this figure who remains alive for the cultural and literary world.
