The finite element method has as its basic principle the discretization of the structure domain, performing mathematical procedures to have a more accurate approximation of the reality of the structure to be analyzed, as there are some factors that cannot be considered when using analytical methods. Thus, by means of a bibliographic research this article aimed to make a comparison between analytical and finite element methods in one-dimensional structures by the Galerkin method. At the end of this research it is verified that, by increasing the number of elements in the mesh that represents the object of study, one has a better approximation of the exact solution. However, the number of mathematical operations to be used by finite element analysis increases substantially.
