This work aimed to identify the level of development of algebraic thinking of mathematics degree students when solving problems of partitioning. For that, the model developed by Almeida (2016) was used as a basis. It proposes four levels of development of algebraic thinking in relation to problems of partition. The research subjects were 64 students from the 1st period of the mathematics degree course at a public university. Data collection occurred through a test composed of six partitioning problems. We found that most participants (73%) have consolidated algebraic thinking. However, it was still possible to notice that some students begin the mathematics degree course with an underdeveloped algebraic thinking, since 14% of the research subjects are at level 0, that is, they are unable to establish the necessary relationships to answer a problem of partition.
