Abstract

Discussions on how to develop critical and creative thinking in mathematics since Basic Education have gained increasing attention, given the recognition of the importance of this type of thinking by both National and International Institutions. Given this, the objective of this research was to analyze the written production of a group of students from the 9th grade of elementary school in a public school in the Federal District in the dynamic 'Guess the Number' - adaptation of the dynamic 'Forca Numérica', by Fonseca, Gontijo and Zanetti (2018). This is an exploratory research, carried out based on quantitative and qualitative analysis. As a result, evidence of the development of critical and creative thinking in mathematics was found from the generation of questions that sometimes constituted 'clues' for the expected guess; as well as the existence of a unconscious pattern between the students' opinion and action, which indicates the need to undertake other pedagogical actions that incorporate critical thinking into the common, routine action of doing mathematics.
