It examines the evolution of the concepts of document, mediation documental and documentology within the Information and Communication Sciences (SIC), focusing on the French academic tradition. It analyzes the contributions of Paul Otlet, Suzanne Briet and Jean Meyriat, pioneers in expanding the notion of document beyond the book to include different media and social functions. The text discusses document mediation as a fundamental process of transmission, valorization and legitimization of documents, highlighting the role of information professionals and authors. It explores the development of documentology as a scientific field focused on the analysis of the document as a social construction, addressing processes of production, circulation and legitimization of recorded knowledge. It also highlights the influence of digitization, analysing phenomena such as “redocumentarization” and the diversification of mediation practices. Finally, advocates systematic research into specific types of documents and emphasizes the relevance of documentology for understanding sources in an increasingly complex information environment. The critical analysis of document production is presented as fundamental for the advancement of methodologies and theories in the Information Sciences.
