Profile of Nursing and Medicine Students of a Univerity Regarding Depressive Disorder

Abstract

Identify and punctuate the prevalence of depression among Nursing and Medicine students at a Federal University in Southern Brazil and characterize their profile. Descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional study. Electronic questionnaires were applied, from June to August 2019, to 223 students between Nursing and Medicine. Predominantly female and single group and mean age of 24.1 (±6.34) years. The average score of the Beck Depression Inventory was 14.9 (±10.56) points. The depression, at more severe levels, predominates in the 2nd semester, in Nursing, and in the 5th year, in Medicine. There were differences in the comparison of the Inventory averages between the courses (p<0.05), but not when compared between men and women (p>0.05). The existence of depression among health students is alarming as they are the ones who will attend the population. Therefore, a closer look is needed on the part of educational institutions.
