Abstract

: In Brazil, in 1820, the effects of the Liberal Revolution of Porto caused intense movement
in the internal dynamics of the provinces with the formation of antagonistic political groups: some
loyal to the commands of the Royal Family residing in Rio de Janeiro and others maintaining an
intense connection with Lisbon, following orders issued by the Portuguese across the Atlantic.
Starting from the liberal movement of 1820, this article consists of analyzing the process of political
unity of Maranhão in the Brazilian Empire, observing the particularities of the province’s
“adherences” to the Porto revolutionaries in April 1821 and in July 1823 to the Independence of
Brazil, highlighting the administrative reorganization with the commands dispatched from Rio de
Janeiro – center of political authority in Brazil.
