This research aims to historicize the trajectory of the Graduate Program in Mathematics Teaching (PEMAT) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in its first 15 years of existence, based on the analysis of the process of implantation and consolidation of the academic master's and doctoral courses. Through a qualitative approach, we propose an exploratory and documental research, resorting to documentary sources related to the graduate program. After document analysis, we narrate the trajectory of PEMAT about the origins, development and challenges for the future of the program. PEMAT built its trajectory based on the pioneering implementation of its academic master's and doctoral courses. The Doctorate in Teaching and History of Mathematics and Physics still receives the qualification of the only doctoral course in the research field of Mathematics Teaching in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It has a faculty with multidisciplinary training and includes renowned researchers in the national and international scene. Graduates of PEMAT already assume several positions in reputable educational institutions. As challenging aspects for the future of the program, we list the concentration of publications by a few professors and low publications by students and graduates.
