UNESCO AND THE MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION: THEORETICAL REVISIONS AND CRITICAL PROBLEMATIZATIONS
DOI:

This text presents and discusses UNESCO’s multilingual education proposal. In addition, it presents a dialogue with contemporary academic reviews and problematizations concerning the concept of multilingualism and multilingual education, especially after the so-called multilingual turn. Drawing on human and linguistic rights, this text recognizes the role and importance of institutionalized international discourses on language rights in favor of linguistic diversity. However, it claims for a careful attention towards the concept of language in the field of politics in order to avoid reifications and fictionalized and romanticized views of multilingualism. We advocate a contextualized, comparative, critical and engaged perspective that prioritizes dialogue and tension against a technical, instrumental, functional and simplified view of language policies.
