Abstract

The book Stay With Me, by Ayòbámi Adébáyò, published in 2017, was analyzed focusing on the mandatory nature of motherhood in patriarchal societies in Nigeria and how this reflects on the success or failure of women. The symbolic representation in the protagonist was evidenced, whose narrative revolving the apparent obstacles in her life towards motherhood takes place during most of the novel. Focused on the feminist movement and its historical trajectory, this analysis used theoretical contributions from: Simone de Beauvoir (2019); Michelle Perrot (2019), Heleieth Saffioti (2015), among others. As for black feminism, the works of the theorists Angela Davis (2016) were used; Djamila Ribeiro (2018); Bell Hooks (2019); among others. Regarding the feminism as a literary movement, there are the works of the scholars Virginia Woolf, (2019) and Elaine Showalter (2014). The analysis revealed that the character Yejide was under great pressure to become pregnant, and only through motherhood was her value determined by the patriarchal society. Because of this, she projected her expectations of happiness in motherhood, model of Nigerian success, proving the necessity of discussions with focus on black feminism in the patriarchal society.
