Abstract

Jorge de Lima is a multifaceted author, for experimenting with various forms of literary work, as well as for his creations in the visual arts, when he dedicates himself to painting and photomontage. Despite the breadth of his work, the writer from Alagoas is little studied by literary criticism, especially when thinking about his novels - hence the pertinence of bringing new reflections on this aspect, which, in our view, dialogues with his main poems. The present work, in this perspective, intends to analyze the melancholic construction of the character Hero, in the novel O Anjo (1934), by Jorge de Lima. For this, theoretical-methodological assumptions were used to discuss how the subject is submerged in the face of sadness, sometimes caused by the feeling of emptiness and painful depression (Freud 2010). In the aforementioned book, the protagonist, averse to the externalities of the world and to the technological advance promoted by modernity, surrenders to a condition of extreme cooling, leading him to attempt suicide. In addition, melancholy emerges in the work as the character cannot resignify the loss of a future ascension through art, by isolating himself from the world and repelling the people around him. This paper, therefore, will be based on the theoretical-methodological postulates of Freud (2010), Starobinsk (2016), Costa Lima (2017) and other authors.
