Abstract

Based on the analysis of the ivory tower image in two sonnets from Livro de Sonetos (1949) written by Jorge de Lima, this paper presents a reflection on the lyric-subject’s position related to the surrounding world. Starting with a close reading of the poetic texts, aware of the diversity and multiplicity of meanings in the poems and also attempting  to dialog with the literary critics who believes that the works of Jorge de Lima are self-centered, uninterested in writing about its own social and historical reality and based on a negative perspective, this paper analyzes how the concept-image of the ivory tower is built in the sonnets and concludes that the negativity present in the poems are not related with a denial of communication or of the reality itself. Rather than it, such negativity must be understood as an outcome of the tensions that support the poems. Among the many tensions in the texts the paper focuses on two specific ones: the conflict between the automatic element and the planned element, as pointed by Fábio de Souza Andrade (2010), and the tension resulted from the attempt to weld the physical time with the spiritual time as highlighted by the author’s reception.
