Abstract

We intend to turn our attention to the narrative production of Nikos Kazantzákis (1883-1957), more precisely to the novel The recrucified Christ (1971), and to investigate what are the possible effects of the resumption of religious discourse by the writer. To do so, we will make use of contributions from the field of Comparative Literature, such as Samoyault (2008) and Hutcheon (1985), authors who focused on subjects such as intertextuality and parody, respectively. We postulate, therefore, that The recrucified Christ can be read from the perspective of a parody (resumed with critical commentary) of the Passion of Christ, an event made public from the “Synoptic Gospels” of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, in which Kazantzákis makes intertextual use of biblical passages to support his critique of established Christianity represented by the Orthodox Catholic Church and its authorities, and emphasize its departure from the ideals of Jesus Christ as conveyed by the Gospels.
