An Analysis of the Promotion of Gender and Sexual Diversity in Brazilian Academic Production

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how Brazilian literature, published between 2015 and 2025, discusses the role of libraries in promoting gender and sexual diversity. The guiding question of this investigation is: how has Brazilian scientific literature addressed the role of libraries in promoting gender and sexual diversity? The methodology consisted of a systematic literature review, conducted on the CAPES Periodicals Portal, using terms extracted from the Glossary of Diversity of the Public Defender's Office of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The final corpus of the analysis consisted of six studies, which were categorized according to their nature: bibliographic review, documentary study, theoretical essay, critical essay, historical-documentary study, and exploratory study. Bardin's (2011) content analysis was used to analyze the selected articles. The results indicate that libraries are recognized in the literature as potential spaces for welcoming, visibility, and historical preservation for LGBTQIAP+ populations. However, the effectiveness of this action is intrinsically linked to the ethical and technical training of information professionals. The analysis reveals significant gaps in curriculum training and the imperative need for an institutional commitment guided by social responsibility, the valuing of diversity, and the promotion of equity. It concludes that promoting gender and sexual diversity in the library environment demands a tripartite articulation between the implementation of inclusive practices, critical professional training, and a deliberate social commitment—fundamental elements for consolidating libraries as truly democratic institutions geared towards the full exercise of citizenship.
