Abstract

From Jameson’s idea of metacommentary (1992), this paper aims at discussing the fictionalization of history and the politicization of marginal experiences as a strategy for the revision of North-American official narrative, reframing the participation of black and indigenous peoples. The following novels were taken into account: The color purple (1982), by Alice Walker; Beloved (1987) and Home (2012), by Toni Morrison; Mean Spirit (1990), by Linda Hogan, and Ceremony (1977), by Leslie Marmon Silko, all considered as metacommentaries which, by opposing the official version of history, fill its gaps, and rewrite it from new narrative viewpoints. These narratives legitimize marginalized perspectives, center excluded subjects, and propose a rescue of traditional cultural practices as a means of healing from coloniality as well as a political platform for resisting the westernization of the Americas.

Pesquisador associado ao Grupo de Estudos de Literatura e Crítica Contemporâneas (GELCCO), UEPB/UFCG, e ao Grupo de Pesquisa em Estudos de Texto, Leitura e Linguagem (GETELL), do IFS.
