Abstract

Assuming that translations have the potential to reproduce and/or subvert normative ideologies (VENUTI, [1998] 2019) and based on Queer Translation theories (LEWIS, 2010), this research makes a comparative analysis of the Spanish and German translations of the manga Houseki no kuni, whose characters do not have a specified gender, focusing on which translational strategies were employed to deal with the non-binarity of the characters, and whether such strategies make this feature of their identities visible or lead to its erasure. The analysis of the data shows that both translations chose to use gender-neutral languages as a way to translate the text into grammatically gendered languages without assigning a gender to the characters in the manga. Despite showing considerable divergences in the way these strategies are presented to the readers in their paratexts, both editions are successful in making visible the non-binarity of the characters.
