The implementation of Law 10.639/2003 and the impacts on education in Vitória da Conquista-BA

Abstract

The article aims to understand the paths taken for the implementation of Federal Law 10.639/03 in the Municipal Education Network of Vitória da Conquista-BA. Given this context, the central purpose of the research is to analyze the process of implementation of Federal Law 10.639/03 in order to verify the way in which the contents involving the History of Africa and Afro-Brazilian Culture are being materialized or not and to what extent it has contributed to the promotion of racial equality, the elevation of self-esteem and respect for differences. To achieve the objectives, we conducted a bibliographic research on the subject and activated some documents that deal with the implementation of the aforementioned Law. Given the effort of this writing, we could see that between 2005 and 2006 there was a mobilization for the implementation of Law 10.639/2003, which established the creation of the Center for Ethnic-Racial Diversity, as well as the specific discipline African and Afro-Brazilian History and Culture. Given the narratives of the interviewees, it was clear that in the first years of implementation there was a series of continuing education, but in 2017, the year of the interviews that support this article, we found that most schools did not offer the specific discipline and the Diversity Center itself was inoperative.
