Body, gender and sexuality in Arundhati Roy’s ficction

This article aims to discuss how the indian local writer Suzanna Arundhati Roy represents body, gender, and sexuality in both her novels The God of Small Things (1997), winner of the Man Booker Prize, and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (2017). On the first novel, Baudrillard (1990) guides the discussion on the character Ammu’s transgressive body that uses seduction as a strategy in search for freedom, love, and pleasure. On the second work, Judith Butler (2010) orients the investigation on the gender construction of the character Anjum’s body, born intersexual and who decides to become a hijra – one of the nouns for a female transgender person in India. The study also proposes a dialogue to Roy’s nonfictional essays, written between the novels, in order to show that Arundhati Roy’s fiction is as political as her nonfictional works.
