Abstract

The present work focuses on a sociological reading of the short story entitled "Ana Davenga" by Conceição Evaristo, published in the book Olhos d’água in 2014, presenting preliminary reflections on black women's condition as portrayed in the short story. It starts from the conception of literature as an instrument of humanization: to approach Afro-Brazilian literature contributes not only to the knowledge of Brazilian society but also minimizes prejudices against Black people. The analysis is also based on an interdisciplinary approach with sociology, touching on feminist studies (especially Black feminism), as it considers Black women as a target of double prejudice. Despite Evaristo's blunt narrative and the tragic outcome, the story ends with an image of encouragement amid suffering and inequality. The expected results are a reflection on the role of Afro-Brazilian literature in combating racial prejudice and the interpretation of an emblematic character who represents the condition of black and poor women in Brazil.
