Abstract

This article analyzes the representations of Brazilian landscapes In A Cruising Voyage Round the World (1712), by Woodes Rogers, aiming to understand how the travel narrative that Inspired Robinson Crusoe constructs images of Brazil. Landscape is approached as a socio-historical construction, articulated with geographical and cultural knowledge. Based on specialized bibliography (Vidal de La Blache, Cauquelin, Baldin, Silva et al.), the study Interprets Rogers’s descriptions through the lenses of Cultural Geography and Landscape Theory. It discusses how these narratives produce political meanings and reinforce a colonial imagination of the New World. Brazil is portrayed as exotic and wild, consolidating stereotypes that express European relations of power and colonial domination In the eighteenth century.
