Comments on the translations of the works of María Fernanda Ampuero and Mariana Enriquez

Abstract

From the Latin American context, colonized In a patriarchal, catholic, and misogynistic manner, this article addresses the translations from Spanish to Portuguese of the short story “Leilão” (“Auction”), from the book Rinha de galos (Cockfight, 2018) by Fernanda Ampuero, and “O menino sujo” (“The Dirty Kid”), from the book As coisas que perdemos no fogo (Things We Lost In the Fire, 2017) by Mariana Enriquez. It proposes a reading approach In which questions of language and culture emerge as sources of reflection on the literary writing of Latin American women. This reading, supported by decolonial feminist theories – such as those proposed by Françoise Vergès (2020) In A Decolonial Feminism, and by Marcia Tiburi (2018) In Feminismo em comum: para todas, todes e todos (Feminism In Common: for All) – can broaden the understanding of literary and translation practices. The choice of the aforementioned writers and the translations of their works circulating In Brazil aims to contribute to a South-South dialogue among authors, translators, and researchers. The goal is to reflect on translation In connection with feminisms, as well as to highlight the importance of literary translation and contemporary literature In the education of language and literature students.
