Abstract

Bernardine Evaristo’s debut novel Lara (2019 [1997]) blends personal memories with transnational narratives about her British and Nigerian family history. In subsequent works, Evaristo broadens her focus, exploring the presence of black people In British and European history. Her novels, such as The Emperor’s Babe (2017 [2001])e Blonde Roots (2020 [2008]), challenge dominant narratives, celebrating Black resistance and agency. Evaristo employs an Inventive aesthetic, combining historical fantasy, humour, and hybrid language. This article analyzes her treatment of black history, exploring how gender perspectives shape her fictional constructions.

Paulo Henrique de Sá Júnior, Escola Alemã Corcovado - RJ

Doutor em literaturas de língua Inglesa pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Desenvolve pesquisa sobre a escrita feminina negra contemporânea. Integra a linha de pesquisa “A voz e o olhar do outro: questões de gênero e/ou etnia nas literaturas de língua Inglesa”. Especialista em English Language Teaching pela Universidade de Cambridge. Cursou aperfeiçoamento em ELT em Hilderstone College. Atualmente, é professor e coordenador da Deutsche Schule Rio de Janeiro, Escola Alemã Corcovado.
