Abstract

The object of study of this paper is the problem of slavery and race in Leibniz’s work. This is woven through two opposing positions. On the one hand, there are arguments against circumstantial slavery (Chattel slavery, war slavery, and hereditary slavery) in works such as Sur la notion commune de la justice. On the other hand, in texts such as Consilium Aegyptiacum and Modus instituendi militam novam invictam, Leibniz seems to sympathize with the idea of natural slavery, since there are peoples (Caribbean, African) who are susceptible to being enslaved from a young age and used to form armies that spread European Christianity. Therefore, the purpose is to expose these two positions, their elements and the arguments for each, in order to understand how to interpret these statements in Leibniz’s work.
