Abstract

Plotinus' philosophy focuses on the distinction between the intelligible and sensible levels of reality. Matter exists in both of these levels: the matter of the intelligible is the receptacle of eternal and unchanging forms, while that of the sensible results from the weakened activity of the soul and is the substrate in which becoming occurs. The origin of evil, linked to the matter of the sensible, is a consequence of the distancing from the one. For Plotinus, overcoming evil is only possible when the soul seeks union with the one through the intellect, which restores virtue and attains unity with the one.
