Abstract

The aim of this text is to present Zizek's proposal for the phenomenon of consciousness based on the analysis of two antinomic conceptual systems: cognitivism and psychoanalysis. Based on the concept of the parallax gap presented in his book The Parallax Vision (2006), Zizek proposes a materialism that is similar to modern sciences, based on processes that can only be described in the form of desubstantialized events that emerge from matter, called emergent properties. In this sense, the Slovenian philosopher believes that this non-reductionist materialism can be found from the tension, from the conceptual gap that opens between Freudian psychoanalysis (death drive) and cognitivism, from which it will be possible to carry out a more careful analysis due to the minimal difference between the explanations of the two conceptual systems.
