Abstract

Apollonius of Tyana was a figure who probably lived in the 1st century AD. Despite doubts about the possible historical Apollonius, his life was biographed by the Greek sophist Flavius Philostratus in "The Life of Apollonius of Tyana" (VA), which described intriguing facts about him. Among these, miracles were reported, later compared to the miracles of Jesus of Nazareth, as well as reports that he followed the philosophy of life of Pythagoras. However, in the accounts, it is clear in Philostratus' work that the Philostratian Apollonius possesses mystical practices that translate into Bertrand Russell's definitions. This article seeks to understand the mystical practices performed by Apollonius of Tyana as defined by Bertrand Russell in "Mysticism and Logic" and to offer some considerations on Apollonius' practices, as reported by Philostratus, regarding mysticism.
