The Laicism Project conducted by Afonso Costa and the establishment of Portuguese Republic in 1910

Abstract

We aim to analyze the process of implementation of the First Portuguese Republic in 1910 and its laicism Project led by the then Minister of Justice, Afonso Costa. From Cultural History and Discourse Analysis, we examined both periodicals and legislative documents important in the institution of an anticlerical culture in Portuguese Society, such as the Law of Separation between the State and the Church of 1911.
