The search for identity recognition
the trajectory of the Camba on the Brazil-Bolivia border
Abstract
In this article, I propose to revisit the strategies developed by the Camba in Brazil, who call themselves indigenous, in the midst of their identity construction process in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul, bordering Bolivia. The Camba, especially those living in the town of São Francisco, part of the Cristo Redentor neighborhood in the city of Corumbá/MS, due to their coexistence in an urban space, interact with the most diverse social actors in the regional context where they find themselves, alternating moments of tensions and negotiations either with other indigenous groups, such as the Guató or institutions, such as FUNAI, providing articulations, generating conflicts and also even new possibilities and norms of interactivity, which become more complex because they are set in an international border region.
