The women of Canudos and the horizons of silence
a look at the feminine in Backlands: The Canudos Campaign by Euclides da Cunha
Abstract
The present essay seeks to add to the debate regarding the problematization of the nuances of the feminine in the work Os Sertões (1902), by Euclides da Cunha. From now on, I intend to understand how this historiographical and literary classic permeates the construction of the accounts of Canudenses women: silencing, absences and archetypes of misogyny that permeate the temporality and personality of the author. For the construction of the argumentation, in addition to the above-mentioned work, the text has questions initiated in works such as The women of "Os Sertões" (1959) by José Calasans, Presença das mulheres em Canudos (2002) by Luzilá Gonçalves Ferreira and Mulher presente: existência e resistência em Os Sertões de Euclides da Cunha (2018) by Anélia Montechiari Pietranide, as well as, other theoretical bases and discussions that encompass debates on Gender, Literature, History and the Sertão.
