Research on jornalistic biography in Brazil

Abstract

This article proposes an update on the most recent Brazilian studies in the field of Journalism regarding the biographical book. The survey is justified by the need to understand the state of the field, given the scarcity of academic production pointed out repeatedly by Vilas-Boas (2008), Vieira (2011), and Lima and Martinez (2017), despite journalistic biographies standing out in the editorial market since the end of the 20th century. A qualitative meta-research was conducted based on the publications available on the Capes Periodicals higher education reference portal, covering the period from 2017 to 2023. This research follows the parameters of Content Analysis. Searching for “journalistic biography” or “biographical journalism” followed by “biographies” and “journalism”, we obtained 47 results (34 peer-reviewed and 27 in Portuguese). Extracting repeated or foreign works, reviews, and those not centered around biography from the list, we arrived at 14 scientific articles authored by researchers in Journalism and Communication. To explore the material, we highlight the categories of empirical object, methodology, objective, and result to investigate points of unity between the different works.
