A Room of One’s Own

Lugar de Mujer and the Approach to Violence in 1980s Buenos Aires

Authors

Abstract

This article analyzes how Lugar de Mujer, a feminist house founded in Buenos Aires in 1983, addressed domestic violence during Argentina's democratic transition. Based on the documentary analysis of 144 materials from the Lugar de Mujer Collection at CeDInCI, the article reconstructs the organization's practices of intervention. The findings reveal a dual operation: the construction of domestic violence as a political problem and the development of concrete mechanisms to address it, combining self-help groups, legal counseling, and professional care. This articulation between politicization and assistance prefigured forms of intervention that would later become institutionalized.
