Abstract

The metadiscourse study is essential for the comprehension of how authors discuss in their writings. We adopted here the Hyland theory. We investigated the use of hedges in research articles’ introductions of public administration’s field of Portuguese language. A descriptive and qualitative analysis of hedges was done from 80 articles’ introductions, being 40 introductions from the decade of 1960s e 40 from 2010s. In the corpus, it was verified the currently use of the indetermination strategy, which took place through linguistics resources like epistemic and approximate expressions, stressing the verb poder, the adverbs principalmente and (em) geral, moreover the adjective possível, among others. These hedging resources showed variation of frequency of use and revealed themselves as important rhetoric tools for the negotiation and the scientific knowledge, emphasizing the research article role as a place for the argumentation playing and indicating the promotional, communicative function of the introduction section, what made possible to the authors take stance in a prudent, persuasive and deferential manner, protecting themselves against the peers’ criticism and obtaining professional space in their community.
