Abstract

The use of language presents linguistic forms In variation, which coexist and compete with each other. The coexisting forms are linguistic variants when there is a variable rule In the language. In Brazilian Portuguese, future tense is a variable linguistic phenomenon, manifesting itself In different ways. This study, supported by variationist Sociolinguistics, is based on Bagno (2007, 2009), Coutinho (2005), Oliveira (2008), Sousa (2007), among others. It aims to Investigate, In high school students’ texts, the verbal uses used to represent the hypothetical future tense. The object of study is the variation between the future tense “I would save the money to help my family” and the imperfect tense of the Indicative “I saved the money to help my family” In the texts of these students. To generate data, students produced texts stimulated by a hypothetical situation. The data were coded and submitted to the GoldVarbX program for statistical analysis. As a result, we have alternation In the use of verbal tenses, Indicating that linguistic and extralinguistic factors such as verbal conjugation, gender and teaching modality contribute to this alternation. Students use four variants to represent the hypothetical future: simple future tense, compound future tense, simple imperfect tense, and compound imperfect tense.
