This paper aims at investigating how Edgar Allan Poe’s work impacted contemporary concepts of literary and cultural theory and criticism. Inventor of an extremely effective narrative and conceptual model (the short story), Poe also contributed in a unique way to a range of other forms and genres, including non-fiction genres (poetry, essay, theory, criticism), becoming a key writer in the conception of what we call Modernity. This paper discusses how Poe’s work remained in evidence throughout the centuries, having been the subject of discussion of the main methodologies or academic approaches (Formalism, Structuralism, Psychoanalytic criticism, Historical-Cultural criticism, Deconstruction) and it concludes that Poe was and has been an essential writer for establishing contemporary understandings about theories of the text, theories of reading, literary and cultural practices.
