Abstract

The goal of this research is to understand the meanings that boys and girls attribute to pedagogical strategies that modify game rules to increase girls’ participation, as well as the effects these strategies produce in the dynamics of Physical Education classes. To this end, 11 women and 7 men, former students from schools in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, were interviewed. The results indicate that less-skilled girls see these strategies as an entry point into the practices, while more-skilled girls perceive them as limiting to their performance and learning process; however, both groups identify that such modifications generate tensions in class dynamics. Boys, in turn, dislike how these strategies interfere with the game and externalize this dissatisfaction by placing blame on the girls; less-skilled boys, even though they also experience exclusion, benefit from the prerogatives of invisibility. This highlights the need to adopt other pedagogical strategies that promote equitable participation between boys and girls, in order to increase the involvement of those who have historically been excluded from Physical Education classes.
